Utah prosecutors are moving toward formal charges in the killing of Charlie Kirk, with a filing expected within days after the arrest of 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection with the campus shooting that shocked the country.

Robinson is being held in Utah County after a two-day manhunt led investigators to a suspect they say fired a single shot that struck Kirk during a public event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10.

Law enforcement officials said the arrest followed tips from Robinson’s family and analysis of digital evidence.

Investigators recovered a bolt-action rifle and ammunition that included etched messages, details that prosecutors are reviewing as they prepare a charging decision.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox praised the cooperation that helped end the search and called the attack a watershed moment, underscoring the political temperature surrounding the case.

Robinson remains jailed without bail as prosecutors finalize the case file. A charging announcement is anticipated early in the week, with Tuesday emerging as a likely target based on public statements cited by local and national outlets.

Authorities have not confirmed the precise timing.

The shooting unfolded as Kirk, 31, took audience questions at Utah Valley University. Officials say the gunman fired from an elevated position away from the crowd, striking Kirk before fleeing the scene.

The attack set off a large, multiagency response that included campus police, state investigators, and the FBI. By Friday morning, a suspect was in custody after relatives alerted a family friend with law enforcement ties, according to officials.

Kirk’s death has prompted tributes and vigils across the country, as well as renewed arguments over the causes and consequences of political violence.

His widow, Erika Kirk, vowed to continue his work and keep Turning Point’s events on the calendar. “We will carry forward,” she said, thanking law enforcement and supporters who rallied in the days after the shooting.

Authorities have urged patience as they sift through evidence, including footage, ballistics, and online activity that could illuminate planning or motive.

While elected officials have floated theories and penalties, prosecutors typically hold those judgments until the charging documents are filed and a judge sets the first substantive hearing.

For now, Robinson’s status remains unchanged as investigators and the county attorney’s office move on a timeline that points to an initial court appearance and an outline of specific counts in the coming days.
